The Surgical Process is painful
Thankfully we live in a world of modern day dentistry and pain free dental treatments. Here at Belmore Dental Studio & Implant Clinic each day we hear from our patient how amazed they are that their Dental Implant treatment was quick, comfortable and pain free. Unfortunately, anxiety and nervousness are also pain free but debilitating emotions often preventing patient from getting much needed treatments. The great news is that we can also resolve these fears by offering carefully controlled and monitored conscious sedation making every treatment possible to even the most nervous.
The Recovery is long
Dental Implant recovery periods actually take two forms – there is the immediate recovery after surgery and then the recovery time of the bone whilst fusing with the dental implant.
Recovery time from the surgery is extremely quick with many people able to return to work the very next day – in more complex cases recovery can take a little longer up to 7 days. During this time some discomfort and swelling can be present (which doesn’t occur in everyone) but this will be easily controlled with over the counter medications. Our second recovery time of the bone fusing with the implant can take between 6 weeks and 3 months – this process is completely unknown to the individual.
I’ll be left with no teeth or posts in my mouth during the treatment

It is true that the dental implant process can take from 3 months up to as much as 12 – 18 months in the more complex cases but during this time you need to continue to smile and eat with confidence. There are many factors which can affect the longevity of a Dental Implant in Northern Ireland and there is no guarantee that they will last a life time. That said the first dental implants was placed on a Swedish man Gosta Laarson in 1965 and was still going strong right up to is death in 2006 – 41 years later.
Implants are not “Fit and Forget” they need the same care and attention as natural teeth.

On completion of treatment it will be necessary for you to attend a number of recall appointments to check the condition of the implants and to adjust the bite if required. After this, regular 6 – 12 monthly dental check-ups are required to monitor the condition of the implants and any remaining natural teeth. Regular hygiene maintenance appointments are also required, as a build of plaque will cause gum problems and possible bone loss from around your implants, resulting in their eventual loss. If you have teeth and implants mixed together it is also very important to maintain the health of the natural teeth. Should the natural teeth become infected or are lost for any reason the remaining implants may be damaged by the extra pressure caused by the addition work load.
