Jaw, Face, Head & Neck Pain

Annamaree Welsh

"I am a dentist Belmore Dental and have had a bruxism problem for 35 years. I had tried every splint possible to try and relieve my problems but nothing worked. My biggest problem was not being able to sleeping, tenderness of my face muscles, and frequent headaches. I was approached by the rep from Cerezen about trying this appliances. At first I was a bit dubious about wearing something in my ears… yes I know it sounds strange!! But I was promised this would reduce my clenching/grinding and I gave it a go. Hooray. I have never slept so well. I didn't actually realise my grinding/clenching was causing so many problems with my sleeping.. I NEVER GO TO BED WITHOUT THEM IN NOW. Once you get used to them they are very easy to wear."

TMJ Therapy and Jaw Pain Treatment
Do you suffer from migraines, headaches and/or facial pain?

If you experience facial/head pain or jaw pain, and/or headaches and migraines you may significantly benefit from TMJ therapy from the qualified and experienced dentists at Belmore Dental Studio.

Common TMJ symptoms include:
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Jaw pain
  • Clicking or popping when opening or closing the mouth
  • Teeth grinding or jaw clenching
  • Pain in the chewing muscles and/or jaw joint soreness
  • Limited movement or locking jaw
  • A change in the way the upper and lower teeth fit together
  • Facial pain
  • Sensitive or sore teeth
  • Back, neck and shoulder pain
  • Ringing or pain in the ears
  • Dizziness

Factors such as sleep quality, stress, lifestyle, diet, depression, medications, other diseases and illnesses, and many other important issues all need to be considered.

What is TMJ?

The Temporomandibular joint, or TMJ, is the small joint under your ear that joins your skull to your lower jaw. Teeth grinding and clenching, stress, poor posture, injury and some illnesses can cause TMJ injury and result in facial pain and jaw pain that can range from the uncomfortable to unbearable.

Dentists can now treat previously complicated dental problems quickly and easily. At Belmore Dental Implant Clinic we use many different treatments specific to your symptoms such as Botulinum ToxinTM therapy or the revolutionary Cereven device.

What is Botulinum Toxin?

Botulinum Toxin Type A (BTx-A). BTx-A is a purified natural protein that is administered through the skin to work on the underlying muscles of the head and face. It blocks the release of neurotransmitters from nerve endings.

Although chiefly used to stop muscle contraction, it might also relieve pain by preventing nerves from releasing inflammatory molecules. Botulinum Toxin is often an excellent treatment for those who suffer pain from muscle related tension.

Botulinum Toxin is used to target the temporalis muscles around the temple (commonly the source of migraine pain) and the powerful masseter muscles in the cheeks (often fatigued due to clenching and grinding). Patients can still chew and function normally and their facial expressions are not affected.

How can Botulinum Toxin help?

Botulinum Toxin Treatment is a simple, nonsurgical treatment that can temporarily decrease the number of TMJ clenching events and their intensity. This in turn reduces the destruction of teeth, gingival and the TMJ, thereby also reducing any discomfort and pain pertaining to the chewing muscles of the face. The results are often felt within 24-48 hours and full effects are expected after 10 days. Results are temporary, lasting from 3-6 months. There is also the likely possibility that with frequent treatments, the injected muscles will atrophy allowing the patient to go longer between treatments.
